Mission, Vision and Values

The mission of Alexandra House is to empower victims of domestic and sexual violence, and inspire social change through education, support, and advocacy.

Our Vision

Alexandra House envisions a world where abuse and violence are unacceptable.

What We Believe
  • Domestic and sexual violence are part of a historical pattern of violence and oppression that disproportionately impacts women and children.
  • Domestic and sexual violence affects those of all classes, genders, ethnicities, faith communities, races, sexual orientations, ages, and different abilities.
  • Domestic violence is not limited to physical abuse; it includes emotional, financial, sexual, spiritual, and psychological abuse. It is about power and control over others.
  • Domestic and sexual violence are crimes and violations of human rights.
  • Sex trafficking is a form of violence against women and children.
  • Domestic violence is a direct link to other forms of violence and social problems.
  • Violence is a learned behavior and a choice.
  • Domestic and sexual violence are community problems. Our success is directly connected to working with members of the community in ending domestic and sexual violence.
Our Core Values
  • Safety: We are committed to adhering to policies and practices that create a safe environment for program participants and staff.
  • Collaboration: Domestic and sexual violence are community problems that impact all of us; our success is directly tied to working effectively with others. We promote positive, professional partnerships that enhance our ability to serve victims/survivors and expand our capacity to confront and change cultural norms and practices that facilitate violence against women, men, and children.
  • Respect/Cultural Proficiency: We are committed to empowering victims/survivors and helping them heal through establishing safe and trusting relationships and providing services that are respectful, confidential, compassionate, and honor victims/survivors autonomy and self-determination. We respect differences —relating to individuals as individuals within an awareness of the influence of culture. We are committed to continuously learning about the cultures of others and how culture influences each of us and our work together. We are committed to fostering a work environment that respects diversity, supports professional growth, encourages critical thinking, and promotes effective advocacy and social change efforts.
  • Accountability: Our services are victim-centered, driven by the needs, strengths, and voices of victims/survivors. We are committed to the thoughtful evaluation of our work and the ongoing development of innovative programs and services that meet the diverse and emerging needs of victims/survivors. We are wise stewards of our resources.
