Domestic and sexual violence are local, national, and international problems. Nationally, 1 in 3 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime; 1 in 4 will experience sexual violence. Last year in Minnesota at least 34 people lost their lives as a result of domestic violence. And these statistics do not tell the thousands of muted stories of survivors, of families, who live with violence every day, and are unable to reach out for help. The Walk for Hope is an excellent way for people of all ages to learn about how we can come together as a community to keep all families safe and work towards a violence-free future.
Alexandra House in conjunction with Allina Health and its Penny George Institute for Health and Healing are pleased to offer free health screening at this year’s Walk! Participants can have their blood pressure taken, and their blood drawn to determine their non-fasting total cholesterol, HDL, non-HDL and glucose levels. Each participant will also have an opportunity to review their results with a health professional. Recommendations will be given on ways to maintain or regain a healthier life. If necessary, a referral to a health care provider will be suggested for further testing or treatment.
The mission of Alexandra House is to empower victims of domestic and sexual violence, and inspire social change, through education, support, and advocacy. Alexandra House provides 24-hour emergency shelter, support services, legal and hospital advocacy to victims of domestic and sexual violence. We are the only such service provider in Anoka County.
