The
Shelter Program provides individual advocacy and support to
women and families during their stay at the shelter. The shelter
operates
24 hours a day, and can accommodate up to 35 women and children.
The families served by Alexandra House represent every economic,
cultural, educational, and lifestyle diversity.
Support for
Women
Women’s Advocates work closely with resident
women, offering support and connecting them to valuable community
resources, such as:
Economic assistance
Safety
planning
Medical services
Education/Job training
Legal
advocacy services
Housing resources
Support Groups are an integral component
of the program and are offered several times each week. Topics
include:
Self-esteem
Domestic
Violence education and support
Parenting
Community
resources
Support
for Children
Family Advocates work with the children
residing in the shelter, partnering
with the Women’s Advocates
and also working closely with the moms to provide comprehensive,
wrap-around services for the entire family. Family Advocates
offer support on issues such as:
Safety planning
Child
abuse
Sexual abuse
Self-esteem
In addition, special activities and outings are planned regularly
for the children to provide free time for moms and fun for the
kids in a safe and nurturing environment.
In 1988, Alexandra House became the first
shelter in the state to offer an on-site school. Teachers work
with the children at
the shelter in a classroom setting, allowing children to maintain
a daily routine in a safe environment, while staying current
with class work.
