Emergency Shelter
Alexandra House operates a 24-hour emergency shelter and can accommodate up to 35 women and children at one time. The average length of stay is 15 days, but we work with each client on an individual basis to help meet their needs and secure safe, affordable housing.
Advocates work closely with resident women, offering support and connecting them to valuable community resources, such as:
- Economic assistance
- Medical services
- Education/Job training
- Housing resources
Support groups are also an integral component of the program and are offered several times each week.
Children in the Shelter
Over half of the residents of Alexandra House are children. Advocates and volunteers work with children in partnership with moms to provide comprehensive, wrap-around services for the entire family. Children get special attention, and we work with them on:
- Safety planning
- Child abuse
- Sexual abuse
- Self-esteem
In addition, special activities and outings are planned regularly for the children to provide free time for moms to plan for the future, and fun for the kids in a safe and nurturing environment.
In 1988, Alexandra House became the first shelter in the state to offer an on-site school. Teachers work with the children at the shelter in a classroom setting, allowing children to maintain a daily routine in a safe environment, while staying current with class work.
